New Ashpan Fabricated

After the boiler of 6201 ‘Princess Elizabeth’ was lifted at Carnforth back in the summer, it was found that the ashpan needed to be completely renewed.  On the face of it, this should not be a difficult job but, although the 6201 Society possesses a good number of LMSR engineering drawings, none of these contained anything which showed the ashpan in detail.

Thought was given to copy the worn-out original if all else failed, but fortunately, after much diligent searching, one of the original drawings came to light. Anybody who has dealt with engineering drawings will know that these come in all shapes and sizes, but these were particularly small.  However, the all-important details and information were there and thanks to the skill of the Carnforth engineers, the new ashpan was soon taking shape.  It currently resides within the workshop awaiting fitting, and was photographed by our Society Chairman, Clive Mojonnier at the end of October.

Given its shape and the fact that it was completed in the run-up to the Festive Season, it has been nicknamed “Santa’s Sleigh”.  Santa’s sleigh is synonymous with thoughts of joy and goodwill. There’s no doubt that the sight of ‘Lizzie’ back on the main line will bring joy to many and, with goodwill the Society will achieve its aims.
